  • Notice the bright zeros in the ten thousands digits on all 4 displays. I need to figure out why. Jm Palson, John Robertson and others suggested a few things to look for. With any Gottlieb of the system 1-80 era the connections are always the first suspect.

  • Player 2 display showing a 2 on top of a 1 when it should be blank. Weird characters likethis *can* be the result of corrupted memory and resetting the high scores should clear this up. However, this did not clear it here.

  • Player 1 should have the zero at the ones digit but there shouldn't be anything in the 10 thousands! Ghosts in the machine.

  • When all the digits are on the ten thousands REALLY gets bright, as seen here it's almost white bright! Time to check voltages.

  • All fixed! The problem was caused by two things. The 60 volts DC was sitting at 62 volts. Perhaps a previous owner wanted to brighten the displays? Turned back down via the pot R16 on the PS board to 60. It looked much better at that point but slight ghosting still evident. Power off, remove connectors A1-J2 and A1-J3. Pins in shells looked great. Scrubbed the back of the board at the finger connector headers with a clean green scotchbrite pad, wiped down with clean cloth. Plugged connectors and fired it up, perfection! Typical flaky system 1 connectors. You'll notice in this pic player 1 display looks sharper and brighter than the others. That's because I used a 9 volt battery and jumpers on the outer pins of the glass to rejuvenate it. I held the battery on for 10 seconds. I did this on all displays except the credit display but wanted to show the difference so just player 1 shown brightened here.
